The last elf night
Christmas Eve with a visiting elf
Christmas Eve on this site is the last elf night, not a second holiday you have to produce. The plate for Santa can be a real plate. The elf goodbye can be a note in a stocking or a thermos on the counter. You do not have to connect them with a trail of props from the kitchen to the tree. Do the elf first, while the kitchen is still calm. Then put out cookies, carrots, or whatever your family actually leaves. If the elf's note mentions Santa, keep it to thank-you and see-you-next-year. Kids are already at full volume. A short scene reads as care. A long one reads as a parent who did not get to sleep. If you forgot the elf until late, use a backup note and a single seat by the tree or the clock. Christmas morning does not depend on a perfect exit. Pack the doll away after the kids have seen the note, then let the day be about breakfast and the people at the table.
Elf first, plate second
The elf scene and the Santa plate are two different jobs. Finish the doll, then slice the cookies. A thank-you at each placemat can sit under the real plates if you want them to share a table. It should not replace dinner.
A small goodbye is the tradition
Stocking note, scarf cape, boots pointed toward the door, or a letter on the nightstand. Choose one. The printable Christmas Eve letter is there if you want full sentences. A sticky note with the elf's name is allowed to be the entire speech.
When the night goes sideways
Use the report-to-Santa backup if the doll never moved, then go to bed. Say, in the morning, that the elf left while you slept. You do not owe a reenactment. The holiday is still intact.
