A pair
Two elves, one easy scene
Two elves means you can stop inventing a solo stunt every night. Give them one job they do together. A picnic on an empty plate, a picture book opened like a tent, or a gentle scarf tug along the back of the couch is a whole morning. You do not need matching outfits. Two dolls, a ruler, a shoebox, or a pair of sticky notes is enough. Let one elf be the silly one and let the other hold the pencil. Kids like seeing them talk to each other. You like that the scene explains itself before you have had coffee. Keep both dolls where little hands and pets cannot pull them down. A counter, a dresser, or the back of the couch is plenty. On Christmas Eve, one can pack a washcloth bundle while the other waves. That uses both of them without a second craft project. If you only have one doll, skip this set and use the everyday list. Nothing about a kind visit requires a pair. A second elf is a bonus, not a homework assignment.
Give them one shared job
A seesaw, a tea party with dry measuring cups, or a high five that has not landed yet is easier than two separate jokes. One note can speak for both. If you write a conversation, two sticky notes are the whole script. You do not need props that only work once.
Seats that hold two dolls
A shoebox bunk needs a steady lid. A ruler seesaw needs both elves near the middle so nobody launches. Test the balance once with your hand before you leave the room. If it tips, the morning surprise will be on the floor, and so will your patience.
Christmas Eve with a pair
Pack and wave is the goodbye built for two. One elf sits with the bundle by the door. The other sits on a book with a paper flag. Keep both out of the doorway. In the morning, both dolls go into the same bin.
When the pair is a lot
You can put one elf 'on a trip' with a note and run the month with one doll. Kids accept a trip more easily than a parent who is secretly managing two productions. Bring the second doll back for the goodbye if you want the pair in the last scene.
