Help With My Elf

Last morning

Christmas Eve elf goodbye ideas

Christmas Eve is already full. Someone wants pajamas, someone wants to know if it is morning, and the cookie plate still needs a decision. The visiting elf does not need a parade on the way out. A goodbye can be one note and one seat. The point is that a small visitor remembered to say thank you, then left before breakfast. Kids feel the season close. You get the doll into a box without staging a scavenger hunt at bedtime. These scenes use a stocking, a scarf, a mug, a thermos, or a piece of paper. None of them ask you to build a flight path through the house. If you have two elves, one can pack a washcloth while the other waves. If you have a pet, keep the note on a counter or a mantel and leave tinsel off the floor. Set the scene after the kids are asleep, the same way you set any other night. In the morning the elf is gone, the note is still there, and Christmas can belong to the people in the room.

Keep the exit shorter than the month

The month was a string of small mornings. The last one should be the smallest. A cape by the door, a paper key in the stocking, or a compass on a closed book is enough for a child to understand that the visit is over. You do not need a second craft project on the longest evening of December.

Where to leave the last seat

The door, the mantel, the kitchen table, and the nightstand are the spots kids already check. Pick the one on your way to bed. Keep boots and mittens out of the walking path, and keep the doll off the stairs. A goodbye that causes a trip is not a kind goodbye.

What the note should say

Thank them for ordinary kindness. Name one real moment if you have it: a turn taken, a sorry that was true, a shoe that got found. Say you will be gone on Christmas morning and that you will look for them next year. Skip scores, threats, and a list of mistakes. The printable goodbye letter on this site is the long version. A sticky note can be the short one.

If it is already late

Use the bedtime clock note or the pillow letter and stop. Christmas morning does not depend on a perfect exit. Pack the doll away after the kids have seen the note. The rest of the day is breakfast, not another scene.
